The Iowa Alliance for Campaign Finance Reform says Iowa’s campaign finance law is a “black hole” which needs to be fixed by legislators — now. A judge has tossed out the long-time prohibition against corporate contributions to Iowa politicians as well as the portion of the law which requires political action committees to reveal where they get their money and which candidates get the PAC’s contributions. League of Women Voters of Iowa President Mary Daily Lange says money is being poured into campaigns atan alarming rate, and the judge’s action means there’s no way to find out who’s getting how much from whom. Joan Lucas of the League of Women Voters of Iowa says with absolutely no limits on campaign spending or donations to candidates, it’s imperitive to ban business contributions to candidates. Lucas says there’s no question some Iowa politicians are now accepting bucks from businesses. Under Iowa law, legislators won’t be required to reveal those contributions until January of next year.
