The F-B-I is reportedly planning to cut the number of agents serving in theIowa & Nebraska district this year. Iowa Senator Tom Harkin says the plancalls for a reduction from 68 agents to 63, with three of the five lostagents coming from the Des Moines/Cedar Rapids area. Harkin is sending aletter of protest to the F-B-I director. Harkin says it sends the wrongmessage to communities for the Bureau to consider cutbacks to the staff whenmore agents are needed to fight crime and drugs. Harkin says the proposedbudget would cut 27-hundred F-B-I agents, as well as 780 D-E-A agents and31-hundred Border Patrol officers.
