Nearly 25 percent of Iowa residents were missed in the 1990 census, andstate leaders are hoping to change that in time for the next populationcount in 2000. Beth Henning has been appointed by the Governor to head thestate’s census effort.Henning estimates that 125-billion dollars in federal funding is based oncensus data.Henning is working with cities and counties, getting local officials todouble-check residence lists. She says 91-percent of the cities and countiesare checking their lists to be sure everyone gets a census questionnaire.”Henning says Iowa is the national leader in planning for the census.
