A program called “Sole Power” is being launched today at the University ofNorthern Iowa, but it has nothing to do with James Brown or Aretha Franklin.Organizers are hoping people will use the soles of their shoes, bicycles orskates to get around Cedar Falls instead of their cars.Kathy Gulick is director of U-N-I’s Wellness and Recreation Center. She saysevents today include: free bike registration, tune ups, bike swaps, bike andhelmet sales and bike giveaways. She says walking or taking a bike to classmakes sense because it saves money, is good for the environment and good forthe health of the participants.Students, faculty and staff will also be able to turn in their parkingpermits today for rebates, when they pledge to find alternative ways to getto campus.
