An effort is underway across the state to create a map showing where Iowa’swildlife lives. Iowa State University extension wildlife specialist JimPease says they are looking for volunteers to participate in the”NatureMapping” program. He says the program was started in WashingtonState.Pease says researchers can learn a lot from the program. He says animals that become extinct are a good example of what can happenwithout good information. He says they become extinct because no one trackedwhat was happening to them.Volunteers are trained to locate and map out the habitats of animals inspecific areas. Pease says another big value in this is getting peopleinvolved because they then feel ownership for the animals. Pease says there are training workshops for the NatureMapping scheduledthroughout the spring. For more information you can call Pease at515-294-7429.
