The 77th running of Veishea ended quietly yesterday at Iowa StateUniversity. The student-run celebration has been marred by riots & even amurder in recent years. Officials say 44 arrests were made over the weekend, compared to 112 last year. Ames police chief Dennis Ballentine says theevent’s success may be a combination of cold weather and a ban on alcohol:Even after two quieter Veisheas in a row, Ballentine says he’s concernedabout future celebrations because of the turnover among students.Veishea co-chair Scott Desotel thinks the festival went well, though headmits he didn’t know what would happen.Co-chair Amy Lee knows some students criticized the alcohol-free nature ofthe celebration, but she’s satisfied with how things went.
