The Iowa House today will debate a bill which declares English Iowa’sofficial language. The measure has already cleared the Senate and wouldland on the Governor’s desk with House approval today. Governor Vilsack isthreatening to veto the English-only bill.Vilsack says it sends the wrong message to the immigrants that Iowa needs tohelp the state grow.Vilsack says it’s in the state’s “long-term economic interest” to beportrayed as a welcoming haven.Vilsack likes the portion of the bill which establishes a “welcome center”for new Iowans — a place where immigrants can find out about Englishclasses and jobs.
