Iowans in 18 cities will learn about preserving the past today through aworkshop that’ll use the state’s high-tech fiber-optic network. The workshopfrom 3 to 5 p-m aims to teach people the best ways to save old scrapbooksor to create new ones to preserve their family histories.Nancy Kraft is a featured speaker during today’s presentation over the IowaCommunications Network or I-C-N. Kraft is a preservation librarian with theState Historical Society of Iowa in Iowa City. She says it’s important thatpeople take special care when dealing with these bound time capsules.On the personal level, Kraft says scrapbooks may be the only way to findinformation about our families and how they lived. Kraft says people who’reputting together new scrapbooks or who are trying to preserve old ones needto be careful about using tapes and glues.She says the scrapbooks themselves need to be purchased very carefully.Kraft says to make sure the plastic is labeled as “archival.” Sites for theworkshop are: Ames, Anamosa, Atlantic, Cedar Rapids, Clarinda, Davenport,Denison, Dubuque, Fort Dodge, Iowa City, Johnston, LeMars, Marshalltown,Mason City, Pella, Pocahontas, Spencer & Waterloo.
