Iowans who have relatives in Albania and Macedonia can put the wheels in motion to get those loved-ones to safety here in the Hawkeye State. Governor Vilsack says those who have relatives in the region should call the Iowa Bureau of Refugee Services. The phone number for Iowa Refugee Services is 1-800-362-2780. Iowans may also contact their nearest office of Lutheran/Catholic Social Services. Vanessa Smith, a volunteer at the Des Moines Refugee Cooperative Ministry, says it involes a little paperwork. Even though only two Des Moines-area families have filed to get Albanian relatives brought to Iowa, Smith says it’s not a sure thing the refugees will be allowed to come. The Lutheran/Catholic Social Services office is at (515) 277-5131.
