Two members of Iowa’s Congressional delegation are questioning PresidentClinton’s expected call today for new restrictions on guns. Fifth districtrepublican Congressman Tom Latham isn’t sure more laws are the answer topreventing more attacks like the one a week ago in Colorado as everythingdone by the students is already illegal.Latham says the real root of the problem is a breakdown of standards in oursociety, in addition to failing parental involvement and communityinvolvement.President Clinton proposes legislation that’d include an extension of theBrady Law handgun restrictions and new penalties for adults who givejuveniles access to guns used in crimes. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassleyquestions Clinton’s motives, saying the President’s response for problems ispassing a law. The White House says the proposals and the timing of the announcement werein the works long before the Colorado shootings but the massacre may speedthe bill’s passage.
