The Iowa Securities Bureau is leading what it calls a “financial literacy”campaign in high schools across the state this week. Securities Bureau Enforcement Director Gary Marquett says it’s veryshort-sighted for schools to teach so much about sex and drugs and so littleabout money.The campaign aims to teach young consumers about saving, investing,recognizing & protecting themselves against schemes and keeping out ofcredit trouble. Through the campaign, 470 high school teachers across Iowawere sent books so they can tailor a course in financial literacy.Marquett says they’re never too young to start learning the importance ofsaving. He says studies have found just ten hours of financial literacyinstruction are enough to prompt teenagers to start saving.
