It’s a statehouse tradition. An office pool of sorts is being run in theIowa Senate. A print-out shows 144 people have paid a dollar each to guess the correcttime of the legislature’s adjournment. Ten Senators have placed their bets, along with a host of staffers and lobbyists, including the Reverend CarlosJayne, an anti-gambling lobbyist. Reverend Jayne says he did it toparticipate in the colleagial atmosphere of the statehouse.Jayne withdrew his bet yesterday afternoon.Reverend Jayne warned his boss, the Bishop, yesterday that he might get somecalls about the deal.State law prohibits anyone from winning more than 50-bucks in an officepool. Dennis Black of Grinnell is one of the Senators who’s betting on theadjournment date and time. He assumed it was a “winner-take-all” exercise, but conceeds the 50-dollar limit should be followed. While there was a winner-takes-all understanding when the bets were made,Senate administrators say no one will win more than 50-bucks.
