Republican presidential hopeful Lamar Alexander is scaling back his nationalcampaign staff and adding to his Iowa office in hopes of boosting hischances of winning the Iowa Caucuses. Alexander’s Iowa manager, DaveKochel, has four new staff members.Kochel says Alexander realizes he must do well in Iowa and New Hampshire ifhe hopes to do well in the next big contest: California’s primary.Kochel says Alexander will be introduced to the rest of the country with atop tier finish in Iowa and New Hampshire.Former Iowa Republican party chairman Brian Kennedy has moved from Nashvilleto New Hampshire to head Alexander’s campaign in that state.Missouri Congressman Richard Gephardt says Alexander’s tactic is risky. Gephardt, a democrat candidate for president back in 1988, spent lots oftime campaigning in Iowa and won the Caucuses, only to falter in othercontests.Gephardt says a presidential candidate has to run a national campaign fromthe get-go.
