Iowans whose homes or businesses were damaged or destroyed in last month’sfloods and storms may not be taking full advantage of Uncle Sam’s offer ofhelp. The high winds and high water resulted in 13 counties being declared federaldisaster areas, but FEMA spokesman Gene Romano says he’s worried asindependent Iowans would apparently rather tackle the costs of rebuilding ontheir own.Romano says the aid is not charity or welfare, it’s money set asidespecifically for this type of disaster. About 24-hundred Iowans have appliedfor aid and more than three-million dollars in grants & loans have beenapproved. Those loans are to 61 Iowa homeowners and nine business owners. Iowans whomight be eligible for loans or grants can call 800-462-9029.
