Potential “first gentleman” Bob Dole is in Omaha today to headline acampaign fundraiser on behalf of his wife, Elizabeth Dole’s, bid for theRepublican party’s presidential nomination. Mr. Dole attended two campaign events in western Iowa on Sunday. In CouncilBluffs, he talked with reporters about his role in the campaign, and whatrole he might have as husband of the first female American president. Dolesaid he’ll do what he’s been doing for the past 25 years of his marriage –whatever he’s told.Dole said he’ll have a “fairly active role” in the campaign.Dole said George W. Bush is the candidate backed by the “establishment” ofthe republican party. Perhaps in a comparison to Britian’s Princess Dianawho was dubbed “the People’s Princess,” Dole called his wife “the People’sCandidate.” In a quip aimed at current First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton’s apparentdecision to move to New York and run for that state’s U.S. Senate seat, Dolejoked that he might move to Arkansas and run for the U.S. Senate, too.Dole appeared at picnics in Council Bluffs and Bedford yesterday. Dole wonIowa’s 1988 and 1996 caucuses. The ex-Kansas Senator served as U.S. SenateMajority Leader ’til he resigned in ’96.
