Researchers at the University of Iowa have unlocked one of the clues to whatcauses migraine headaches. Associate psychology professor Andrew Russosays the study focused on the anti-migraine drug sumatriptanand how it affects chemical secretions called neuropeptides that causemigraines.Russo says they also believe sumatriptan was effective in fighting migrainesbecause it increased calcium levels in the cells responsible for migraines.He says they now need to figure out what other chemicals help block theneuropeptides that cause the migraines.Russo says they’re in the very early stages of the study and it could besome time before they can narrow down other chemicals that help fightmigraines.
