Iowa’s newest peregrine falcons are sporting some new jewelery. Thecoordinator of the project to re-introduce the peregrines to Iowa, JodeanneCancilla says the birds now have a band on each leg to identify them. The three peregrines are 25-days old and live with their parents atop a bankbuilding in downtown Cedar Rapids. The only other adult nesting peregrinesin Iowa live in Des Moines.Cancilla says the Cedar Rapids chicks face a future in the next severalmonths where the odds are against them. There is a 60-percent chance theywill die in their first year.The Macbride Raptor Project that Cancilla coordinates has worked for sevenyears with the peregrines in Cedar Rapids. The nesting pair has been in DesMoines for six years.Cancilla says they hope to one day see the peregrine falcons nesting ingreat numbers across the state.
