A new group has blown into Iowa that aims to promote the use of wind power. The Iowa Wind Alliance is being created by former state Senators DonGettings and Allen Borlaug. Gettings says it’s expensive to build the bigtowers with propellers on them.Gettings, of Ottumwa, says there are already several wind farms in Iowa thatare beginning to turn out huge amounts of wattage. With each wind farmthat’s built, Gettings says there are improvements. The Alliance aims to break ground on a headquarters and, eventually, a windfarm in the Clear Lake area next month. Gettings forsees many more windfarms in the Hawkeye State, catching the breeze and generating electricity.Gettings says there’s one drawback to wind energy — it’s only as reliableas the wind. He says traditional power plants will always be needed as abackup — just like solar energy can’t be generated at night or on cloudydays.
