Governor Vilsack is willing to call lawmakers back to Des Moines for a”special session” if legislative leaders want to fix a law which has forcedsome small-town mayors to resign in order to continue receiving a statepension. Legislative leaders last week proposed a quick fix by changing some rules,but Vilsack says the attorney general told him he doesn’t have thatauthority.Vilsack says it’d be nice if there were a less complicated way to resolvethe problem, but Vilsack says he just doesn’t have the legal authority towave a wand and fix it.If legislators don’t want to come back for a one-day special session to fixthe problem, Vilsack promises he’ll act quickly on any bill legislators passnext year to reinstate mayors and city council members who retired fromgovernment jobs.
