After years of work, the Des Moines Golf and Country Club is ready to host the U-S Senior Open. The first of three days of practice begins this morning. Ceremonies on Sunday officially opened the festivies which are expected to attract better than 30-thousand fans per day. The last time a “major” golf tournament was played in Iowa was 1963 when the Wakonda Club in Des Moines hosted the U-S Amatuer championship. Tom Meeks, the Director of Rules and competition for the U-S-G-A, says everything is in place for a successful championship. Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack says the entire state has anxously awaited the chance to host the Open. Vilsack says it will also offer Iowa a chance to showcase itself to the rest of the country. The first round of the Senior Open is Thursday.
