A University of Iowa study of nearly 800 older Iowans finds many of them areignoring recommendations to get a couple of health-sustaining vaccines. The report says only about 68-percent of the Iowa senior citizens surveyedgot flu shots in the past year, while 51-percent got pneumonia shots andjust 44-percent got both. U-of-I professor Margo Schilling says physiciansshould blame themselves for the low number.The survey questioned 784 random adults, at least 65 years old, from bothrural and urban Iowa. Schilling says some senior citizens said they avoidgetting the vaccines because they see the shots as an inconvenience.Schilling says some seniors don’t get their shots because they see them asan inconvenience, while others think you can catch the flu by getting thevaccine — which she says is plain wrong.
