Iowa’s nuclear plants ready for Y2K

One-third of U.S. atomic power plants are NOT “Y-2-K” ready — but BOTHnuclear power plants serving Iowa consumers HAVE prepared their computersfor the turn of the century. A spokeswoman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says nuclear powerplants in Palo, Iowa, and Cordova, Illinois, have taken steps to ensuretheir computers have been upgraded so the machines won’t crash at the turnof the century. The Duane Arnould Energy Center is operated by AlliantEnergy. Two R-E-C’s — Cornbelt and Cip-co — own a small stake in the Paloplant. The Quad Cities Generating Station is co-owned by CommonwealthEdison and MidAmerican. Commonwealth Edison owns three-quarters of theplant and is in charge of operations. There are one-hundred-three atomicpower plants in the United States.
