An Iowa State University professor is working on a project which willredefine those “Recommended Daily Allowances” of things like vitamins andminerals. You see the R-D-A’s printed on the sides of cereal boxes and onfood labels. I-S-U professor Alicia Carriquiry (karra-keer-ee) is studyingthe numbers, not the food value. The Institute of Medicine’s Nutrition Board is adding four new recommendedintake categories for EACH nutrient. They deal with average requirements, daily requirements, adequate intakes, and upper tolerance levels. ProfessorCarriquiry is trying to explain what those new numbers mean.Carriquiry says these new numbers will help you choose foods rich in thenutrients you need. The whole project is still in the testing process.
