Dave Eichelberger came from behind to win the U-S Senior Open Sunday at theDes Moines Golf and Country Club in West Des Moines. The Waco, Texas native made seven birdies and carded a final round 68 to finish the championship with a seven under par three-stroke win over EdDougherty (dock-er-tee’). Eichelberger started the day one shot behindDougherty but Dougherty’s double bogey on 14 gave him the lead. Eichelbergersays he felt the tournament was his after he birdied 15. Eichelberger takes home 315-thousand dollars for the victory. He says he gotin a groove, but doesn’t know how.Ed Dougherty had led the tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday butsaid he didn’t feel the pressure on Sunday.Dougherty boggied 14 to lose his lead. He wouldn’t second guess whathappened.Defending champ Hale Irwin had trouble with his putter and couldn’t overcomefour boggies. He finished the championship tied for third at two under alongwith Joe Inman and Gil Morgan. Irwin didn’t take any consolation in the fact it took a final round 68 byEichelberger for the win.Sunday’s round wrapped up a record setting week for attendance as51-thousand-two-hundred fans turned out. Championship director Jeff Masonsays the total attendance was 252-thousand-eight-hundred.Mason says in just a few days, things will be back to almost normal at theDes Moines Golf and Country Club.
