One of the state’s top fire officials says an urban legend is circulatingthat someone talking on a cell phone while pumping gasoline in Indonesiaaccidentally sparked an enormous, destructive blast. Iowa Assistant FireMarshal George Howe couldn’t confirm the story, but says it is POSSIBLE it’strue, and Iowa cell phone users should act accordingly.Howe says you should carefully read all of the fine print in the literaturegiven to you by cellular telephone companies.The Chicago suburb of Cicero passed a law this month banning cell phone useat service stations, carrying a fine of up to 500-dollars. Howe says he’snot aware of any Iowa laws on the subject but says to be on the safe side,turn your cell phone off before pulling in to fill up.
