The state high school softball tournament opened last night and featured the quarterfinal round in Class 1A. Woodward-Granger showed its championshipmettle on Monday night.

The top-ranked and defending champion Hawks used alate rally to down upset-minded Armstrong-Ringsted 3-2. Right fielder LisaTiernan provided the heroics with a two out single to left which capped athree run sixth inning.Also in Class 1A, second-ranked Alburnett edged number-15 Wapello 3-2.

Alburnett coach Kevin Johnson says his team was thrilled with the victory.Two Pirate runs came on squeeze bunts and Johnson says that is typical.North Polk got a three-hitter from Jodi Christensen to down Remsen St.Mary’s 3-0.Megan Beaman tossed a three-hitter for eighth-ranked Earlham but it was her bat that made the difference. Beaman doubled in Stacy Lister with the go-ahead run in the fifth as the Cardinals edged ninth ranked SouthWinneshiek 3-1.

In Class 2A, Lindsy Owen had a fourth inning single to drive in the eventual game winner as top-ranked Waukee edged unranked Marion 2-1. Waukee coach Jen Slausen (slaw-sun) is glad to have that one out of the way.Also in 2A, Perry cruised to a 7-0 victory over Osage.
