While the horrible heat wave that killed more than 200 people nationwide ispast, low-income Iowans will be able to stay cool for the next round. Afederal grant of 3-and-a-half million dollars will go toward helping theneedy buy air conditioners and pay their electric bills.John Burnquist is the Iowa coordinator for LIHEAP (ly-heep), the Low IncomeHome Energy Assistance Program. He says certain financial qualificationshave to be met to get the help.Burnquist says the program is designed to help people pay their coolingbills and may even get their houses better-equipped to handle the next heatwave.The program will also help establish cooling centers through non-profitagencies and elderly programs. Burnquist says LIHEAP provided energyassistance to 60-thousand Iowa households last winter.
