After refusing invitations to speak to an important Hispanic group in hishome state of Texas, George W. Bush, the front-runner in the Republicanpresidential race, met with Iowa Latinos today in West Des Moines. Bush spoke to the group for about five minutes, then spent 15 minutesanswering questions from the crowd of about 50. It’s the first time Bush hasanswered questions from Iowa voters in a public forum. Bush said Hispanicvoters were the kind of “new faces and new voices” he wants to attract tothe Republican party. Sandra Sanchez of Des Moines told Bush the RepublicanParty has been very harsh with immigration and immigrants.Another voter asked for Bush’s view on affirmative action.Bush said he supports “Enlish Plus” rather than “English Only” laws, whichdrew the applause of the crowd. Bush talked in both english and spanishduring his appearance.
