Sportsmen and women must complete a hunter education course before they canobtain a hunting license in Iowa, and class sizes are limited. Stateofficials say that means it’s best to pre-register for September classes ifyou intend to hunt this fall. Dennis Orcutt is the chief hunting instructorfor Story County. Orcutt says students are taught basic survival techniques and first aid.Orcutt says the 10-hours of required instruction is far less than what’srequired for hunters in other countries.Orcutt says the most common mistake students in his class make is that theytreat their firearm like a toy. Orcutt shows a video which tells thestories of hunters who’ve been wounded by their own gun.
