One wing of a building that’s served hundreds of thousands of University ofIowa students over the decades is being vacated for safety reasons. Thesouthwest wing of Seashore Hall opened in 1898 as part of the originalU-of-I Hospitals. It was most recently used for journalism, sociology andart classes, offices and labs and housed a psychology library. It’s all gotto move, according to Dick Gibson director of U-of-I Facilities Services. Hesays it’ll be hard to find space for everything & everybody.Gibson says that wing of the century-old wooden building is unsafe and couldcave in given the right kind of storm.Gibson says the roof could collapse with a strong wind or a heavy snow. Onlythat wing of Seashore is being roped off. He says the rest of the structurewas built later & is still safe.
