Nearly six-hundred Iowa businesses have failed to meet an E-P-A deadline fordeveloping a plan should there be a chemical spill at their business. However, Iowans HAVE filed nearly one-thousand plans to prepare foraccidental chemical releases. Brian Button of the Iowa Department ofNatural Resources says the plans were due June 21st.While six-hundred Iowa businesses have yet to file a spill management plan,the state’s businesses are a leader in meeting the deadline.Fifteen-hundred Iowa facilities which store chemicals are required by law tofile spill management plans.Button warns the E-P-A could fine the five-hundred-75 Iowa businesses whichhave failed to develop a chemical spill management plan.Button says the plans, which are filed in the regional E-P-A office in KansasCity, are open to the public. Button is a D-N-R air quality informationspecialist.
