The Midland Dairy Association of Iowa is part of a national campaign to tryand increase the amount of milk kids are drinking in school. TheAssociation is targeting the people who plan the lunches for schools withbrochures, videos and training materials on the importance of milk. MidlandDairy Association Dietician Kathryn Thompson says milk is no longer thetraditional drink with lunch in many schools.Thompson says their biggest selling point for milk is its nutritional value.She says most kids don’t get the recommended four servings of milk neededevery day to supply calcium to their growing bones.Only about 15-percent of girls drink the recommended amount of milk and only30-percent of boys. Thompson says offering chocolate milk is an acceptableway to get kids to drink milk.Thompson says getting younger kids to drink milk usually hooks them asadults too.
