A federal report finds more younger Iowans taking up the deadly habit ofcigarette smoking. The Centers for Disease Control says nearly a third ofIowans between the ages of 18 and 24 smoke, which is slightly higher than thenational average. Anti-tobacco forces say they’re working to educate people,Teresa Harms is the legislative director for the Iowa chapter of theAmerican Cancer Society. Harms says cigarette companies are no longerfocusing on adult smokers. She says big tobacco wants — and is getting –children addicted to smoking.Harms says the C-D-C report had some encouraging news. It found the overallnumber of Iowans smoking was 23 percent, which is just below the nationalaverage of 25 percent. She says a wide-ranging attack plan is getting themessage out to Iowans.Iowa is scheduled to get more than 76-million dollars this fiscal year aspart of the tobacco settlement.
