Two Iowa congressmen are trying to help an Iowan caught in a tough legalsituation in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. Senator Charles Grassleyand Representative Jim Nussle are circulating a letter asking for supportfor Loren Wille (will-ee), a native of Amana. Wille was involved in a fataltraffic accident in the Republic of Georgia while working there for CatholicRelief Services. A Georgian woman who was a passenger in Wille’s vehicledied after being thrown out during the accident. The letter says Wille isbeing charged with what amounts to manslaughter despite evidence that he wasnot driving recklessly. There is speculation Wille is being treated in abiased manner because of U-S action against a Georgian diplomat who wascharged in the drunken driving death of a teenage girl in the U-S. Grassleyand Nussle are asking that other congressmen sign the letter calling forfair treatment for Wille from the Georgian government. Iowa Senator TomHarkin has already agreed to sign on to the effort.
