Former ISU coach will pay fine for lying on resume

An embattled former volleyball coach from Iowa State University will NOThave to do jailtime. Kerry Miller pleaded guilty to lying on her resume. Miller resigned in April after false items on her resume were revealed.Miller could’ve gotten a year’s sentence yesterday but was only fined 650dollars.

Survey shows Iowa economy continues strong

A Creighton University economic survey of nine midwestern states shows thecost of making goods continues to increase.Creighton economist Dr. Ernie Goss says the increase in production costshasn’t translated into a slowing economy just yet, but could later thisyear.Dr. Goss says Iowa’s economy has weathered problems in the ag sector verywell.Goss does a monthly survey of Iowa and eight other states.

August was a touch cooler than normal

The man who calculates the state’s weather records says August of 1999 wascooler and somewhat drier than usual.State Climatologist Harry Hillacker says temperatures averaged adegree-and-a-half below normal in August. That compares to July, which wasa significantly warmer-than-normal month.Hillacker says August’s cool weather was good for crops which were wiltingunder July’s heat.Hillaker says the summer has been about normal for temperature extremes,which may surprise some Iowans who suffered through the sweltering heat.Despite the extreme heat of July, the summer is tracking only one-tenth ofone degree above normal. Rainfall for the summer is about one inch abovenormal statewide, though some areas were much higher. As for the seasonsahead, Hillaker says it’s hard to determine exactly what the current La Ninapattern will bring.The Farmer’s Almanac predicts big blizzards toward year’s end.

Bats raise rabies concern in Quad Cities

While there is sweeping concern about a rabies outbreak stemming from anortheastern Iowa petting zoo, the Quad City area is watchful for rabies fora different reason. Dr. Lewis Katz, medical director of the Scott County Health Department, saysbats are causing more people to get rabies vaccines in the Davenport areathan the petting zoo bear.Only one Quad Citian is being treated for exposure to the rabid bear butthree are being treated for exposure to bats.

Woman charged with having sex while H-I-V positive

A 24-year-old woman is accused of having sex with a 14-year-old Davenportboy without telling him she’s H-I-V-positive. The boy shows no signs of thedisease and may NOT have contracted it. The Illinois woman is charged withcriminal transmission of H-I-V and aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Bothcharges are felonies.

Man injured in cave in

A digging accident in northeastern Iowa leaves a Buchanan County man badlyhurt. 41 year old Terry Manders is hospitalized in critical condition afterbeing buried alive yesterday. A trench he & a friend were digging caved innear Jesup.

Dubuque 911 system starts up

A ribbon-cutting ceremony today will officially open Dubuque County’s new,enhanced 9-1-1 system. Dubuque County Chief Deputy Ken Runde says the heartof the three-million dollar communications system is at the law enforcementcenter.The enhanced 9-1-1 system will enable dispatchers to quickly identify wherea caller is located and more rapidly send the proper type of help. Rundesays the three-million-dollar price tag encompasses several categories.Runde says Dubuque County studied several frequency options in order toprovide improved emergency communication services throughout the county.The new system will serve every public safety agency in Dubuque County inaddition to local hospitals, the regional airport and the county conservationboard’s park system. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is slated for 3:30 p-m.
