The Iowa Soybean Association has won a battle in an attempt to increase theuse of “soydiesel” fuel. Soydiesel uses a blend of soy oil to provide thelubrication needed in diesel fuel. Soybean Association executive directorKirk Leeds says a new development should make it easier for farmers to findsoydiesel. He says two gas terminal suppliers will blend the soydieseell fortheir stations.Leeds says when terminals blend the soydiesel, it’s easier for servicestations to offer it to customers.Leeds says farmers now need to push the use of the fuel.He says they hope to gain some of the diesel fuel market, which is just overthree million gallons for farm use.Leeds says increased use of soydiesel fuel could help increase the demand forsoybeans.
Acorns wanted by state forrestor
State Forrestry officials are asking for your help in supplying the seeds tokeep oak trees growing in the state. Forrestry Bureau Chief John Walkowiaksays the weather has caused oaks to produce fewer acorns than normal thepast two years. He says forrestors don’t have nearly enough acorns toproduce new oak seedlings this year.Walkowiak is asking residents in central and eastern Iowa to collect acornsand bring them in. He says most homeowners rake up the acorns and throw themout anyway.Walkowiak says they need acorns from the white, red, burr, pin, swamp whiteand chinkapin oaks. The D-N-R plants the acorns and raises them intoseedlings.The D-N-R will collect the acorns September 11th at Living History Farms inUrbandale. September 18th at the Indian Creek Nature Center in Cedar Rapidsand September 25th at the parking lot east of the state capitol building.The collection times are 9 am to 3 pm each day.
Iowan missing feared drowned
An eastern Iowa man is missing and feared drowned in one of the Great Lakes. Coast Guard officials are searching for a Guttenberg man who reportedlydrowned Saturday while investigating an old ship wreck in Lake Michigan.53-year-old Dirk Conn was swimming near a group of friends when hedisappeared.
Prison director wants more money to fix up prisons
The state’s prison director doesn’t foresee building a new state prison inthe next 12 months. What “Kip” Kautzky wants is more money to fix up agingareas of existing state prisons. He cites the prison at Anomosa as anexample. He says everything from the electrical to locking systems needwork. Kautzky says Anamosa is just one example of the maintenance work that needsto be done. He says it will take between two and three million dollars toget the work done.Kautzky says he hopes they can address some of the maintenance problems inthe next year.
Two year old falls out of canoe, dies
A two-year-old boy drowned Sunday afternoon in the Turkey River near Elgin. Gabe Hauersperger of Union was knocked out of his parent’s canoe by atree-limb. He was not wearing a life jacket. Searchers found his body intwo-feet of water.
McCarney says two backs work just fine
Iowa State coach Dan McCarney says the Cyclones will continue to use thetailback tandem of Darren Davis and Ennis Haywood this Saturday night whenthey entertain in-state rival Iowa. Davis and Haywood both rushed for morethan 100-yards in a season opening victory over Indiana State.McCarney says using two tailbacks will keep both players fresh.McCarney says the kicking game which struggled against Indiana State needsto show progress.
Professor hopes to treat severe weather phobia
If the mere threat of a thunderstorm is enough to send you cowering into abasement corner, a University of Iowa study may be for you. A psychologicalresearcher is planning to look more closely at people who suffer from whathe calls “severe weather phobia.” The people have so much anxiety aboutstorms that it makes it difficult for them to function.Professor John Westefeld is director of the U-of-I’s counseling/psychologydoctoral program. He’s formulating a way to treat people who are debilitatedby the threat of severe weather.Westefeld borrowed the basic plan for the group therapy sessions fromanother more common phobia…the fear of flying.Westefeld hopes to link up with a meteorologist from a Cedar Rapids T-Vstation to provide group counseling for people who are profoundly afraid ofstorms.
