Senator Harkin endorses Gore for president

Senator Tom Harkin has endorsed Vice President Al Gore’s bid for the democratparty’s next presidential nomination. Harkin’s endorsement speech was madethis morning in a Des Moines city park.Gore thanked Harkin for the endorsement, then delivered a half-hour speechwhich focused on labor issues.A new poll shows Gore’s democrat challenger, Bill Bradley, running nearlyneck-in-neck with Gore in New Hampshire.

Small producers use web to sell products

Small, independent producers in Iowa are using the World Wide Web to bandtogether and sell their commodities to a global market. More than 20 Iowaproducers are advertising their specialty items on one website — withproducts ranging from bacon, ham and buffalo to bratwurst, salsa and honey.Katie Nosbisch is running the “Iowa’s Pantry” website from Decorah. Shesays several Iowa producers had approached her to sell various items butmost producers, being small, couldn’t afford to do it alone.She says the products now number more than 200 and are from growers in allcorners of Iowa. Gore courts union vote in Iowa

Vice President Al Gore is spending the Labor Day holiday in Iowa, buildingties with union workers around the state. Gore spent Sunday afternoon in Waterloo, where he spoke to about 200sedging to be a friend of the labor movement if he’s electedPresident. Gore criticized Republican-led efforts to allow union members towithhold the portion of their union dues which are used for politicalactivities.Without mentioning republican presidential candidate George W. Bush by name,Gore said G.O.P. candidates have “buckled” to pressure to bash unions withthe so-called “paycheck protection” proposal.Just last month, Gore spoke to the Iowa Federation of Labor’s stateconvention in Waterloo, where he outlined many of the themes he’s discussingthis weekend. For example, Gore is calling for a ban on hiring “replacementworkers.”Gore began his Sunday in Detroit, then made a stop in Waterloo beforemeeting with Sioux City-area supporters Sunday night. Today, Gore formallyreceives the endorsement of Senator Tom Harkin, then the Vice Presidentwalks in a Labor Day parade in Des Moines, attends a Labor Day picnic inCedar Rapids and concludes his Iowa trip with a stop in Dubuque.

Cold War vets are honored

U-S military men and women who served during the so-called “Cold War” arebeing recognized with a special certificate. Donald Gerdom, executivedirector of the Iowa Paralyzed Veterans of America chapter, says eligibleservicemen and women must submit a letter and a copy of their militaryrecord to the department of defense in Fairfax, Virginia.The Cold War started at the conclusion of World War Two — the military hasset the start date as September 2nd, 1945. It ended on December 31st, 1991with the collapse of the Soviet Union.Gerdom says the people who served during that time frame knew there wasgreat potential for a fierce military conflict. As a Cold War soldier,Gerdom was a torpedo-man on the U-S-S Lowry and played football for theNavy.
