Senator Tom Harkin met privately this week with the leader of theindependent Soviet republic of Georgia to press for release of an Iowancharged in an auto accident half a world away. Loren Wille (will-ee), anative of Amana, was working for Catholic Relief Services when the wreckoccured. A Georgian woman who was a passenger in Wille’s car was killed.Harkin gave the Georgian leader a letter.Other members of Iowa’s congressional delegation have been involved inpressing for Wille’s release. Wille has been charged with what amounts ofmanslaugther despite evidence that he was not driving recklessly. Twenty-four members of Congress have signed a letter to Secretary of StateMadeline Albright, urging her to seek a fair and unbiased trial for Wille.
