Charges dropped against NE Iowa funeral home director

Charges have been dropped against a northeast Iowa funeral home directoraccused of exposing himself to an elderly couple. Indecent exposure charges filed against 60-year old Ted Shelly of Manchesterwere dismissed as authorities say the statute of limitations on the chargeshad run out. Shelly was first charged three years ago after alledgedlyexposing himself to an elderly couple that rented an apartment from him. Ajury in a civil trial awarded the elderly couple 300-thousand dollars indamages. Shelly’s insurance company has paid five-thousand dollars each tothe couple, but is refusing to pay the remainder of the money pending anappeal to the Iowa Supreme Court.

UNI faces big Gateway Conference game

The Northern Iowa Panthers face a big challenge in the Gateway Conferencethis weekend when they visit pre-season favorite Illinois State. ThePanthers opened the league race with a 34-14 victory over Southern Illinois.U-N-I coach Mike Dunbar says the Illinois State defense is experienced andbig up front.The Panther defense has been outstanding but Dunbar says they face theirtoughest challenge to date against the Redbirds.Dunbar says it is too early to call this a deciding game in the league race.

DNR warns of meth labs in woods

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters and others inthe outdoors that they may run into dangerous materials left over frommethamphetamine labs.D-N-R enforcement officer Lowell Joslin says you should NEVER handle any of the material found at a meth lab. Hesays you should call local law enforcement officers immediately.He says out-of-the-way places you hunt are prime areas for meth labs.Joslin says you should report any suspicious area you think may be involvedin making meth.

Group pushes conservation tillage

An organizer of a new group says Iowa farmers are hurting themselves and theenvironment by not using conservation tillage. It’s the practice of leavingthe previous year’s corn stalks in a field to prevent soil erosion. Thenumber of farmers using the method dropped 25-percent in recent years.Tim Kautza is promoting I-R-M-P, the Iowa Residue Management Partnership. Hesays the group will be going directly to Iowa farmers to find out whythey’re abandoning the use of the conservation tillage method.Kautza says there are many advantages to using conservation tillage.For more information, call Kautza at (515)-284-6648 at the Natural ResourcesConservation Service in Des Moines.

Religious leaders urge prayer for farmers

Iowa’s religious leaders are urged to lead prayers for family farmers. TheNational Catholic Rural Life Conference is issuing the call for a “NationalPeriod of Prayer” starting on World Food Day in mid-October and ending onThanksgiving. Brother David Andrews says there’s misery in Rural America.Andrews hopes other denominations join the effort. The EcumenicalMinistries of Iowa already has joined with the Catholic Rural LifeConference to declare October 17th a statewide day of prayer for farmers.Andrews says farmers who are under stress can go to their pastor, priest orcleric for help.On November 5th and 6th, the National Catholic Rural Life Conference annualmeeting will be staged in Des Moines to talk about healing and creativity inrural communities.

Hawkeyes ready to open Big Ten against Spartans

The Iowa Hawkeyes get set to open Big Ten play this weekend when they visit14th ranked Michigan State. The Hawkeyes are coming off a bye week and coachKirk Ferentz says the time off was good for the team.Iowa’s ground game has struggled and will have a tough matchup against atMichigan State defense that has stopped the run.Ferentz says the health has improved, particularly offensive lineman ChadDeal, who is expected to play for the first time on Saturday.Ferentz rotated a number of offensive lineman against Northern Illinois andsays they will continue to search for the best combination.Michigan State coach Nick Saban says Iowa showed progress in the victoryover Northern Illinois.Saban says the Spartans cannot afford to turn it over four times like theydid at Illinois.There are plenty of connections between the coaching staffs. Kirk Ferentzworked with Saban on the staff of the Cleveland Browns and Iowa defensiveco-ordinator Norm Parker was on the Spartan staff with Saban during the80′s.

U-of-I faculty shares medical knowledge with Russia

A group of University of Iowa faculty members from the College of Medicineis in Moscow for a conference to discuss family medicine. Internationalprogram development coordinator Robin Paetzold (pet-zold) says theconference is the culmination of six years of work with the Russians.Paetzold says the U-of-I doctors can learn from their Russian counterparts. She says the family medicine model used in the United States is more costeffective for Russia.Paetzold says the work with Russia should carry over into other countries.The 10 University of Iowa faculty members will be in Moscow through the endof this week.
