The Iowa Highway Patrol gets a new commander today. Captain Robert Garrisonis being promoted to colonel in a 10 a-m ceremony to become chief of thePatrol. Garrison says one of his primary goals is to put a greater emphasison stamping out methamphetamine.Garrison says 80 to 90 percent of the meth that comes into Iowa gets hereover the highway system. He also wants to see the Highway Patrol developmore collaborative efforts with law enforcement agencies in Iowa’s citiesand counties.Garrison is 46 years old and has served as a Trooper since 1975. Beforebecoming a Trooper, he worked as a registered nurse — and is still an R-N.He recently completed his master’s degree in nursing education.Garrison replaces the retiring Jon Wilson as commander of the HighwayPatrol, which encompasses 450 troopers and 100 civilian workers. Garrisonsays his career goal was to attain his soon-to-be former rank of captain.He calls making chief “icing on the cake.”
