The cost of air travel would be slashed, especially for people living insmaller cities, under legislation being considered today in the U-S Senate.Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says the effort would eliminate the so-called”slot” rule at three major airports.The slot rule guarantees big airlines gate positions at certain airports andkeeps out smaller or new airlines. Grassley says the rule’s demise wouldopen up airports like Chicago’s O’Hare and LaGuardia and Kennedy in New YorkCity. He says the measure also covers Reagan Washington National Airport:Much of the language in the bill was first pushed by both republicanGrassley and Iowa democrat Senator Tom Harkin. Grassley says it’s been atwo-year effort.Grassley says the legislation is of particular value to: Burlington, DesMoines, Cedar Rapids, Sioux City, Waterloo and Mason City.
