Lieutenant Governor hands out Prism Awards

The state’s Lieutenant Governor is handing out seven “Iowa Prism” awards torecognize organizations and individuals who promote diversity in the state. The City of Dubuque, the site of racial tensions and cross burnings back in1991, gets this year’s award for its response to that situation, things likecultural events and conferences aimed at easing tnesions and promotingdiversity. West Liberty Community Schools gets the award for it “DualLanguage” program which teaches both English and Spanish to students. Linn-Mar High School gets the award for “VOICE” — a diversity group in theschool. The University of Northern Iowa gets the award for its “GlobalHealth Corps” program which sends students who plan on a medical career onmissions in developing countries. The Broadlawns Medical Center in DesMoines is honored for a clinic which features interpreters. The AmericanFriends Service Committee is recognized for its Immigrant Rights Project. And a Des Moines woman who is a coordinator for the Iowa Coalition AgainstDomestic Violence, working with immigrants and safe houses, is also honoredwith the “Prism” award.
