Iowa State University research which could make it more difficult to make the illegal drug “meth” is in line for federal financing. A budget bill in Congress would provide a quarter-of-a-million dollars for the project, which is headed by I-S-U professor George Krause. Krause is trying to put something — an “inhibitor” — in anhydrous ammonia so it can’t be used to make meth — but could still be used as a farm fertilizer. Makers of the illegal drug often siphon anhydrous from farm fertilizer businesses to obtain the chemical which is crucial to making meth.
