Movie Makes World Premiere in Des Moines

Tuxedos & black dresses, bright searchlights in the night sky and long limousines. It’s not the makings for a Hollywood event but a world movie premiere in Des Moines tonight. The independant film “The Yoofo Club” (YOU’-foe) is an all-Iowa production that’s only playing this weekend in Des Moines. Kimberly Busbee (BUZZ’-be) is the film’s creative producer. The purely home-grown movie was written, produced and edited in Iowa by Iowans, filmed around Des Moines & Winterset, and features a cast comprised of Iowans, former Iowans and Iowa students. Since the film was done with no Hollywood entanglements, Busbee says it’s not a big-money production — and is well under its 200-thousand dollar budget. Busbee says the recent popularity of the film “The Blair Witch Project” has been a boost to independent filmmakers, proving you don’t need to spend a bundle of money to make a successful movie. The film is about a group of Iowa bar regulars who are awaiting the return of a flying saucer that whisked away the owner’s wife ten years before. The premiere is at 8 tonight at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines, with showings at 2 and 8 p-m tomorrow and at 2 p-m Sunday.
