Only three of the presidential candidates have responded to an Iowareligious group’s request for statements on the issue of “global warming.” Ecumenical Ministries of Iowa is hosting a conference today in Ames todiscuss global warming.Robert Hogg, a lawyer from Cedar Rapids, is the “Global Warming projectcoordinator” for the Ecumenical Ministries of Iowa, a coalition ofprotestant churches. Republican presidential candidates Elizabeth Dole,Orrin Hatch and Allan Keyes responded to the coalition’s request for policystatements.Hogg says Dole, Hatch and Keyes oppose the “Kyoto treaty” which calls forlimits on dangerous gas emissions which some scientists say are creating ahole in the ozone layer, and bringing about the phenomenon called “globalwarming.” Hogg says his group wants to know what other policies those threecandidates support to prevent “global warming.”The Ecumenical Ministries conference begins at 9:30 a.m. today at St. John’sEpiscopal Church.The Ecumenical Ministries of Iowa is made up of Baptists, Disciples ofChrist, the Church of the Brethern, Episcopalians, Lutherans, Presbyterians,the Reformed Church, Mormons, Christians, and Methodists.
