Promoters of Iowa soybeans hope a pilot program in Colombia will help feedthe poor and create more demand for soybeans. The Executive Director of theIowa Soybean Association, Kirk Leeds, says the program seeks to getundernourished Colombian residents to include soybeans in their diet.The program seeks to get the participants to eat a little less than a halfpound of soybeans along with their regular food every day. Leeds says theprogram has shown results.Leeds says they would like the U-S Agriculture Secretary to buy one-billiondollars worth of soybeans to expand the program.He says the program could eat away some of the surplus Iowa soybeans byusing at least 150 million bushels of soybeans nationwide or 25-30 millionbushels of Iowa beans.Leeds says more than 30 countries around the world could benefit from addingsoybeans to their diet.
