Students oppose tuition increase

The State Board of Regents is expected to vote on final approval of a proposed four-point-three percent tuition increase for the three stateuniversities today. Iowa State University Government of the Student BodyPresident Matt Craft says the amount of the increase is a concern as isanother proposal involving student fees. There is a proposal by theUniversity of Iowa to seperate the increases in tuition from student fees.Craft says if the University of Iowa proposal goes through, then I-S-U andU-N-I would follow suit. He says they’re worried student services funded byfees — such as the bus service — would not get the funding they need.Craft says he’s also concerned the tuition increase will hurt I-S-U studentswhose parents are being hit by the agricultural crisis. He says there is anunusual split among the three university student governments over theincrease as both I-S-U and Iowa student governments oppose the increase,while the U-N-I student government supports it. The regents are expected toact on the issue at their meeting today in Iowa City.
