About half of the Iowa hog operations expected to file a “manure managementplan” with the state have done so. Those plans are due to the stateDepartment of Natural Resources in less than a month — on November 15th.Wayne Gieselman (geez’-ull-mun), the state coordinator for animal feedingoperation guidelines, says the plans must include several specific items,such as the amount of manure produced, soil tests, the type of crops you’replanting.Any operation which holds more than two-hundred-thousand pounds of porkmust, by law, file a “manure management plan” with the state. That works outto anyone who has more than 12-hundred pigs.Gieselman and two staff members will review each and every plan.The plans are on file with the state but are not open to the public.
