When World Trade Organization talks begin in Seattle later this month, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he’ll be there to represent the interests of the American farmer. The republican expects several difficult issues to be addressed, primarily the controversy over genetically modified grain. Grassley says the harping over G-M-O crops has hit home.Grassley says a sign at his hometown New Hartford grain elevator says G-M-O corn won’t be accepted if it’s not approved for shipment to the European Union.Grassley has offered what he calls a pro-farmer amendment to a trade bill that’s currently before Congress. He says it would set specific negoitiating objectives to enhance the competitveness of U-S agriculture.Grassley is chairman of the Senate’s International Trade Subcommittee. He was the only U-S Senator to take part in the last round of World Trade Organization talks in Singapore in 1997.
