Government and Economic Development officials in Mason City want to meet with north-side residents in hopes of stopping a lawsuit against two cement plants. Some residents and business owners say the emissions from the plants are unhealthy and they may sue to try and clear the air. Mason City Economic Development Corporation President Randy Cram says the businesses and their 300 jobs are vital to the city’s economy.Former Mason City Mayor Tom Jolas says a lawsuit could shut the plants down. He cites a 1996 case that shut down an egg drying plant as an example.Plant officials say they’re just as concerned about the air quality as anyone else. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is working with the plants to try and control the emissions.
